ACURA Exam Day
On ham radio exam day, please remember to bring the following items with you:
- FCC issued FRN number
- Valid Photo ID
- Copy of current Amateur Radio license (if held)
- Any earned Certificates of Successful Completion
You will also need to provide a valid phone number and email address.
The Volunteer Exam Coordinators (VEC) must submit your FRN with your exam results. You can obtain an FRN from the FCC. For information on how to obtain an FRN, please see this instructional video provided by the FCC:
What Happens on Ham Radio Exam Day
When you arrive, a team of volunteer examiners will check you in and confirm your ID and FRN. After that, you will take a multiple-choice test. The Technician and General exams have 35 questions each, while the Extra exam has 50. To pass, you need about 74 percent correct.
Once you finish, the examiners grade your test right away. If you pass, you will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination, also called a CSCE. Then the VE team sends your results to the FCC, and your new callsign usually appears in the FCC database within a few days.
Did not pass this time? That is fine. In fact, many hams needed a second try. Simply study the areas you missed, and come back to the next session.
