Here in Southern New Jersey, June marks the peak of the legendary 6-Meter “Magic Band” season. During this time, Amateur Radio operators eagerly monitor 50 MHz for Sporadic-E openings that can suddenly transform a quiet local band into a highway of signals from hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Stations from across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and occasionally Europe can appear out of nowhere, often with strong signals that sound as if they are just down the street. The unpredictability of these openings is what makes 6 meters so exciting—one moment the band is silent, and the next operators are working new states, grids, and countries. For many hams throughout New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic region, June is the month when the Magic Band truly lives up to its name.
To help operators make the most of these exciting band openings, we’ve included the Icom 6-Meter Band Plan and a detailed 6-Meter operating guide, along with a few of the East Coast 6 Meter Nets below. These band plans identify commonly used frequencies for CW, SSB, FM, digital modes, beacons, FT8, MSK144 meteor scatter, weak-signal operations, repeaters, and calling frequencies. Whether you’re chasing distant DX stations, exploring digital communications, participating in contests, or simply listening for the next Sporadic-E opening, these band plans provide a valuable reference for navigating one of Amateur Radio’s most exciting and unpredictable bands.
