Repeater Coverage Maps

ACURA ham radio repeater coverage map featuring South Jersey, radio signal coverage areas, amateur radio equipment, and the AG2NJ club callsign.

Can you reach the ACURA repeaters from your house, your work or your favorite fishing spot? These maps show where you can expect a strong signal and where it gets scratchy, for a handheld outdoors, a handheld indoors and a mobile radio in a car. Pick a repeater and your radio, then click anywhere on the map to check that exact spot.

How these maps are estimated
  • South Jersey is nearly flat, so coverage depends mostly on antenna height and power. The maps use the Egli radio propagation model, which was built for this kind of terrain, and are limited by the radio horizon.
  • The 6 m repeater transmits from one tower and listens from another, so its map shows only the area where you can both hear the transmitter and reach the receiver.
  • Handheld: 5 watts with a rubber-duck antenna held at head height (a little less on 6 m, where handheld antennas are very short). Indoors adds about 12 dB of building loss. Mobile: 50 watts with a roof-mounted antenna.
  • Repeaters: their actual transmit power (about 95 watts on 2 m and 70 cm, 30 watts on 220 and 80 watts on 6 m), a 6 dB gain antenna, and 4 dB of cable and duplexer loss. Strong means at least 1 microvolt (-107 dBm) both ways; fringe means at least -116 dBm.
  • Real coverage varies with trees, buildings, your antenna and your radio. Signals often reach farther over water and less far in heavy woods. Treat the rings as a guide, not a guarantee.

Tips for getting into the repeater

  • Go outside or upstairs. Walls and roofs cost a handheld a lot of signal. Standing by a window facing the repeater helps too.
  • Upgrade the antenna. A longer whip antenna on a handheld, or a roof antenna at home, makes a bigger difference than more power.
  • Try a different repeater. The ACURA repeaters are linked, so if one is out of reach, try another band that covers your area.
  • Out of range entirely? Connect through EchoLink or AllStar from anywhere. Check the Repeater Status Board for node numbers and live status.
